DATUM Renovation, measured.

Nineteen years of the same crew getting older together.

DATUM started in 2007 with two carpenters and a truck, in a market where half the renovation firms in Chicago were about to disappear. We got through it by being the company that finished what it started, which sounds like nothing until you have watched the alternative.

Why the survey comes first.

A renovation quote written before anyone has opened a wall is a guess with a logo on it. We know because we wrote them for four years, and we watched what happened in week six when the guess met the building. The survey exists so that the number we hand you is the number you pay, and so that the risk sits with the people who can actually price it.

We opened in Lisboa in 2019 because two of our clients bought there and asked us to. We work on buildings older than the United States and we brought a structural engineer with us on the first survey. We have not stopped doing that.

How the six phases run

Licensed, insured and registered in both markets. Certificates go out with every contract, unprompted.

Who you actually deal with

The person who surveys your building is on site during your build. That is not a slogan, it is a scheduling constraint we accept: it is the reason we run fewer projects at once than a firm our size could, and the reason we will sometimes tell you the start date is eleven weeks out rather than three.

Chicago

Eleven people, a shop on West Fulton and four crews. Greystones, brick two-flats, 1920s bungalows and mid-century ranches, most of them within eight miles of the shop. Illinois roofing contractor licence 104.017842, Chicago general contractor TGC-104882.

Marcus Reyes founded the firm in 2007 after nine years as a carpenter and four running someone else’s sites; he takes the first call and he is on every survey. Dee Okafor runs the sites — the programme, the trades and the Friday photo log are hers, and if your job slips a day she is the one who tells you why.

Lisboa

Thirteen people, a studio on Rua da Boavista, and a structural engineer on retainer rather than on call. Pombalino and gaioleiro buildings, 1940s-70s prédios and Cascais villas. IMPIC alvará 91744, with the statutory five-year structural guarantee on every job.

Ana Salgado opened Lisboa in 2019 and had spent eleven years in conservation before that, which is why we splice a notched gaiola member rather than replace it. She works in Portuguese and English, and she is the one who sits in front of the câmara with your file.

What we do not do

  • New-build houses. Different business, different risk, different crew.
  • Design-only packages. We price what we can build and stand behind.
  • Work outside the service areas below, however good the project sounds.
  • Free estimates. A sales call has to be paid for somewhere, and we would rather it was not in your tile.

years, in writing

  • Two years on workmanshipIn writing, both markets. Five years structural in Portugal, statutory.
  • One project manager, namedThe person who surveyed your building is on site during your build.
  • $2M liability, workers' compOn every trade on site, certificates issued with the contract.
  • A missed date is on usIf we miss a contracted date with no change order behind it, the delay is ours.

Come and see a job in progress.

We will show you a live site rather than a showroom: dust containment, the Friday photo log on the wall, and the crew who will be in your building in eleven weeks.
